“What is Coaching?” Workshop

Imagine you said this: “I’m thinking of resigning. I just can’t take it any longer.”
How would you feel with these two responses?
🔸 “Oh no, don’t say that! It would be awful if you left.”
🔸 “What would be an ideal outcome one year from now?”

The first response is one that might come from a friend or colleague.
The second response is what you might hear from a coach.

A coach is trained to ask open, non-judgmental questions.
A coach doesn’t advise or sympathise.
A coach helps you think through your topic by staying detached and objective.
A coach helpfully guides you to think about your ideal outcomes or future goals.

We had the opportunity to lead a workshop introducing coaching for educators at CoachUP 8 on Saturday, titled "What is Coaching?".

In the workshop, we listened to a coaching conversation and participants drew out the principles and mindset of a coach. Using these, we practiced just one coaching skill: asking open, future-focused questions.

What an honour it was for us to introduce coaching to this thoughtful group of participants! Many thanks for their contributions and reflections.
