Resisting Listening

We had the joy of leading two leadership workshops at Overseas Family School yesterday.

One theme that kept coming up: We often find ourselves resisting reality.

- We know listening matters - but feel there’s no time.
- We want to coach - but feel the pressure to fix things fast.
- We try to validate other people’s feelings - but feel frustrated when they don’t calm down.

Learning to lead in a coaching style is like a martial artist who trains the same move over and over- not to impress, but so it’s there when it matters most.

The more we practise what’s within our control- mindset, self-awareness, communication skills- the more steady we become, even in shifting conditions.

Big thanks to OFS’s Neisha Pratt and Richard Petherick OLY for hosting us, and to everyone who brought such honesty and openness.

What’s something you’ve been practising- not for perfection, but for steadiness in the shifting conditions of work?
