Parent/Teacher Conferences Across Cultures

Last Thursday we had the privilege of working with two groups of educators at St. Joseph’s Institution International on cross-cultural communication in online parent–teacher conferences.

What made the sessions particularly meaningful was the willingness of teachers to explore perspectives different from their own, especially when engaging with many Singaporean parents whose expectations around education can sometimes feel quite different from Western approaches.

Rather than focusing on differences as barriers, the conversations focused on how understanding the values behind those expectations can help diffuse tension and build trust.

The workshops were full of laughter, honest reflections, and rich peer discussion. Together we explored small but powerful shifts, such as structuring online meetings clearly; validating parents’ concerns, needs, and values before responding; and sharing observations in a neutral way to keep the conversation constructive.

These small communication moves can make a big difference in a short online meeting.
