Mental Checks in Meetings

Before sharing one idea in a meeting, how many mental checks might a new Asian team member go through?

💬 Is my English good enough?
💬 Will people understand my accent?
💬 Is this the right time?
💬 Should I let someone more senior go first?
💬 Would disagreeing seem disrespectful?
💬 Is my idea fully developed?
💬 Will I slow the meeting down?
💬 Am I reading the room correctly?
💬 Am I missing an unwritten rule that everyone else already knows?
💬 What if I embarrass myself?
💬 Am I overthinking this?

The answer? Quite possibly all of them.

While everyone else is simply discussing ideas, they may also be navigating language, hierarchy, relationships, and unfamiliar workplace norms, all at the same time. For many Asian professionals, this isn't a one-off experience, it's every meeting at the beginning of their journey.

🌱 Many leaders ask, "How can I get people to speak up?"

A better question might be: "What can I do so they don't have to spend so much energy deciding whether it's safe to?"
